Probe may hit Bangalore airport project

A report presented to Parliament has demanded a probe into contracts awarded by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL).

The Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture said in the report that equity holders are themselves the service providers and there is a conflict of interest.

The airport has been billed as one of the showcase projects in the country and it is expected to cost Rs 1,412 crore.

It will be India’s only airport with a 4,000-meter runway.

Transparent system
Defending the company, CEO Albert Brunner says the project has been functioning in a transparent manner and government agencies in Delhi and Karnataka have been fully involved.

“We are aware of the questions brought. In fact, they had sent us queries and we had tried to answer all the questions about two months ago. I am a surprised with the statement they say now about the lack of transparency,” Brunner said.
