As chaos reigns on the roads of this fastest growing southern city, the Andhra Pradesh government is embarking on a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) to meet the transport needs of the burgeoning population.
With hardly any room for widening existing carriageways or laying new roads or rail routes through densely populated neighbourhoods, the authorities are working on an elevated MRTS project over three major corridors.
The MRTS or metro rail lines would be laid over five metre tall pillars, which would occupy 0.8 metre space on existing roads.
“Elevated MRTS is the only practical solution. We can’t have an underground route as the rock formation here is not suitable for it. It is also time-consuming and will dislocate city life,” said S.P. Singh, principal secretary, municipal administration and urban development.
The state government has invited global expressions of interest-cum-request for designing and developing the project on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.
The tenders for the project, whose estimated cost is projected at Rs.63.66 billion ($1.4 billion), are expected to be finalised by March.
The first phase covering three corridors is expected to be ready in 2009.
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who laid the foundation for four major flyovers in the city Wednesday, said the MRTS and the outer ring road would help ease congestion.
The proposed eight-lane outer ring road of 159 km around the city is expected to be completed by September 2008.
There are 1.8 million personal vehicles in Hyderabad, with 200,000 new ones being added every year.
A survey showed that out of seven million motorised trips in the city, the public transport system (PTS) accounted for only 40 percent instead of the ideal 70 percent.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has already completed a detailed project report (DPR) for two routes Miyapur-Chaitanyapuri (26 km) and Secunderabad-Falaknuma (13 km). The DPR for a third route, Tarnaka-Panjagutta-Hitec City (20 km), will be ready in two months.
