Pune dams under threat if rains don’t stop

Water level in three dams of Maharashtra is almost near the danger mark and officials say they could burst any time if the rains, pouring incessantly over the past three days don’t stop.

All the three dams are situated near bustling Pune city.

Varasgaon dam is more than 85 percent full, Panshet and Khadakwasla are on the verge of bursting and authorities have released thousands of cusecs of water to reduce the danger.

“This dam is 86 percent full and till now we have received 1800 mm rainfall. If it continues then in 2-3 days this dam will be full 100 percent. The neighbouring is also 100 percent full. We are releasing 20,000 cusecs water from it,” said P.K. Kand, engineer at the Varasgaon dam.

The authorities say they have alerted villages along the banks of Mula river which is flowing above the danger mark.
