City housing projects will have to leave space for poor

Lakhs of people working as maids, security guards, sweepers and vendors in the Capital can finally hope to have their own houses near the affluent colonies they provide services to. Delhi, with 40 other cities, has agreed to a new Union housing ministry policy to ensure ‘‘adequate reservation’’ of developed land for economically weak and low income groups in housing projects. Other parts of the NCR like Gurgaon, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad have agreed to follow similar policies, as have cities like Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata and Lucknow. Even private builders and developers in the city will have to make space

10,000 houses for urban poor

The Uttar Pradesh Housing and Development Board (UPHDB) will construct 10,000 houses for the economically weaker section (EWS) in urban areas. The decision comes in response to the state governments directive to provide affordable accommodation to them on a priority basis. The UPHDB has been asked to construct these houses in the current fiscal. Each house will cost approximately Rs 3 lakh. The scheme, under which these houses will come up in Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur and Moradabad, will be announced within a week. In the first phase, the board will construct 6,000 houses. It has already identified land in the

MMRDA’s mantra: If you cant sell, lease it out

The property market crash has foiled the plot for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which relies on selling the land in its possession at market rates to fund infrastructure projects. The authority will get the land back after the lease expires, by when, hopefully, the market would have recovered. On the top of its list is the 370-hectare planned office space at Bandra Kurla Complex, for which the authority is planning

Gold, realty funds still away

The mutual fund industry is still not ready for innovative products such as commodity, gold exchange traded, and real estate funds and is yet to sort out various operational issues, U K Sinha, chairman and managing director of UTI Mutual Fund, said today. In June, the Securities and Exchange Board of India had allowed fund houses to float real estate funds as close-ended schemes, which can invest in real estate properties, shares/bonds of real estate companies, and mortgage-backed securities. However, the market regulator had said these schemes need to declare net asset values on a daily basis.

Property dispute: no HC relief for housing federation

A federation of housing societies, claiming the rights to use a property at Juhu Vile Parle Development Scheme, failed to get any relief from the Bombay High Court after the court upheld the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA)’s decision to allot the plot to another housing society in the same area. The Maharashtra Housing Board Low Income Group Tenements Housing Societies Federation had filed a petition questioning the validity of allotment of a pump station, water tank and garden in favour of Juhu Harshal Co-operative Housing Society limited. The petitioners, a group of 14 buildings, contended that the
